I don't know whether you got an answer to this. A support person from HDTracks gave me the following solution. Whether he should have or not I don't know. You need a 'VPN'. You can get free ones easily. On a Mac, one that works is Hotspot Shield.

You need a local app VPN rather that a website one, as that breaks down when you get to paying (via paypal).Running a VPN means your traffic goes via a server in the US.Once an item is paid for at HDTracks, a VPN is no longer required, and you can download using their download manager like normal. Click to expand.Well I have to be careful here. I got myself into trouble by my comments or lack of comments on the CTTE mastering. That was a closed session, but this was was open and there were several invited guests present. That said, I can't remember the specifc EQ which Steve applied so I'm pretty safe in that regard.

What set the HDT version apart for me was the inner detail, the depth and width, the impact of the bass and the sound of the reverbs. Of course this is what I almost always notice with the HiRes masterings and this was no exception. I didn't do an in depth comparsion between the HDT version and the AF version, but after listening to the HDT version I did listen to the section of Fire and Rain from the AF.Sure enough the tonality is somewhat similar. Perhaps the AF has a tad more low end. What I liked about the HDT was that it seemed to have a faster impact if that makes any sense. The AF may have a bit more low end, but I found it a tad bit softer than on the HDT.

The main difference seemed to be in the inner detail, ambience and reverb. The reverb sound on those low tom fills just excited me to no end. That's the type of thing that really floats my boat, but I've discoverd that it's not always so important to others. All I can say is that this seems closer to how the master sounded in the room to me than does the AF, but IMO most of that is because one is a CD and the other is 24 bit. To me that makes a huge difference. To others, not so much. There is no doubt that Steve is a master at getting the tonality pleasing to the majority of his target audience. That said, there is not much a mastering engineer can do about the limitations of the media, which in the case of the AF was a CD.I may be wrong, but my feeling is that many of the HDT versions that are unique materings may be closer to flat transfers from their sources.

That surely would be a safe way for them to go. I noticed that several of my recent HDT purchase have a lot of energy in the 6k region, and I can't really see why a mastering engineer would do that in today's world. Back in the day, that made a lot more sense since many of these recordings were heard on AM radio. In that case 6k was the upper shimmer where on a full range system it's way too low to serve that purpose and can be irritating.I really noticed this on More of the Monkees and Goldfinger. Both have great virtues and I'm glad to have them in my collection, but IMO they are both on the bright side.

This by no means means that they automatically sound harsh. That said, if there is anything off in your playback system these types of recordings can surely sound harsh.

Bright doesn't have to result in harsh sound. To me harsh sound is when something somewhere in the chain is in distress and this can be anywhere in the recording and/or the playback chains. There is a fair amount of distortion on the Goldfinger cut but it's kind of a neat sound in a way.

In any event it's how I've always heard that song. That said, I noticed none of this on the HDT Sweet Baby James. I find most of the high end to be subtle and delicate.
